The YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South has opened all of its ten centers free of charge to Katrina victims. YMCA Head Start is seeking families and children who have been displaced by Katrina, and will give enrollment priority to these children. We are funded for 160 and licensed to serve 190. We are seeking approval to surpass 160 to accommodate Katrina victims if necessary.
Dr. Forestene London, the director of the program, noted that many Americans are giving very generously in response to the continuing emergency. “I am so pleased,” she said, “to see Americans respond so quickly to the needs of victims in Mississippi, Alabama and New Orleans—it makes you proud to be an American.” |
